Education First is a nonpartisan, informal network of residents of Texas State Board of Education District 10 who are working to promote educational excellence by reducing the influence of politics and ideology on the board. Its mission is to apprise Texans of the importance of the SBOE for their children's education and for the future of Texas. They aim not to support any one State Board candidate, but to provide a forum in which all candidates can express themselves and debate one another. They believe that the resulting competition of positions and ideas will inspire more citizens to vote in the upcoming State Board elections, and will enable them to elect the best board members. ...Did someone say birthday cake?
YES! Saturday, February 27.
Grab your friends and neighbors and come on down to Main Street to join the Bastrop Main Street Program’s landmark third birthday celebration.
This free, public event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. and will be held, weather permitting, at 923 Main Street, the vacant space (next to Baxters on Main restaurant) that the City recently acquired and is using as an events plaza. In the event of inclement weather, the birthday party moves indoors to the Bastrop Opera House.
The community party celebrates three transforming years for Main Street and the launching of a concerted effort to brand Bastrop as a tourist destination with a special emphasis on heritage tourism. During those three years, more than $3.8 million in private funding has been spent in restoring and rehabilitating downtown businesses and another $1.3 million in public funding on grants and infrastructure improvements.
The event will feature birthday cake, of course, souvenirs, and live music. Event organizers are encouraging musicians in the community to “jam”, bringing their instrument of choice and a chair.
